Missing ibprophen. Anyone else?

It's the headaches, the back aches, the feet aches and all of the other aches that come with growing a person I am finding myself missing ibprophen more than ever.

What do you do when Tylenol just doesn't cut it?

I just whine and complain about how much I miss ibuprofin LOL(honestly...I really do) Tylenol does not work for me, either, only ibuprofin does, and I tend to get headaches also. And my jaws will ache if I sleep wrong.

What I miss more than ibuprofin at this point is Pepto Bismol. That has been the only thing to cure my heartburn and I have tried everything anyone has ever named. In the evenings I burp up crap and try not to puke while daydreaming about drinking down some Pepto...

Not ibuprofen, but I normally take tramadol for muscular pain and excedrin as needed. I REALLY miss both. I've got pretty severe muscle spasms, and sometimes it is pretty much impossible to fall asleep until I just get so exhausted I pass out. Last night I was trying BioFreeze, heating pads, ice packs, and nothing helped my lower back. I can't wait until I'm past this first trimester and can get the okay to take it if I really need it for the pain from spasms. I was tempted to break out my tens unit, but that meant digging around for it in the middle of the night. greensad.gif

Is pepto not ok?? I've taken it for heartburn before during pregnancy...granted, I couldn't keep it down but I still tried it

Pepto has bismuth subsalicylate - which in theory could cause issues.

The OB in one of my pregnancies said it's not safe and everything I've read online said it's not safe...my midwife said Zantac is ok but I don't take it often. I'm not sure why Pepto isn't ok but I sure wish it was. At this point that's about the worst thing going on.

I think it has the same issues as aspirin. I haven't read about any issues about it in real life, but may thin the blood or cause issues if you have a fever.

I've been told by my pharmacist that Advil (ibuprofin) is fine until you get to the third trimester.  It thins your blood so they don't want it in your system when you are close to having a baby.

The main issue is that it may cause the ductus arteriosus to close before the baby is born.

Yes I was just going to share that my midwife told me the same thing the other day. The problem for me is- Tylenol is like taking a placebo I swear. It doesn't take pain away, it doesn't reduce a high fever, it's like taking absolutely nothing. So, when my back pain is so severe (scoliosis sufferer) right now at 20 weeks, I asked my MW if it was ok to take a little bit and she said yes, just not in the last trimester. Good to know! Also, not taking it around the clock is important too. And never more than the recommended dose. I must say it still makes me nervous though...But at times, it really comes down to unbearable, indescribable pain or get some relief. If only there were an effective natural option!! I'd take that in a heartbeat!

After getting our DNA sequenced for ancestry reasons, it has been really interesting to look at what has been found genetically. For whatever reason, Tylenol really doesn't do much for about half of the population. The other half, it works great. I just wish there was something else as an option during pregnancy aside from Tylenol, because it doesn't do much for me either.

That is interesting! Good to know it's not just me then- sometimes I think I'm dellusional when I hear that Tylenol seems to help everyone else that I know but not me

Broken Elbow + No Advil = WHY GOD WHY?!

Tylenol does nothing for me.  I just iced way more than directed and tried to find things to keep my brain busy while the toddler jumped up and down on me.

After the first week I kind of got used to the pain.

Healing up nicely now, I can almost straighten it and everything!

(It terrifies me that I was offered narcotics as an option.  I decided to go with pain.)

Yeah, and other things that my general practitioner has offered me while pregnant- such as x-rays. Did you have one done for your broken elbow? I had pneumonia a few months ago and he insisted on an x-ray. I declined it, and because of it, they weren't even totally sure it was pneumonia, but I knew it was, and antibiotics cleared it up. It just bugs me when doctors offer things that have been proven unsafe. My own mom was suggesting I take strong narcotics for my pelvic pain- I was like "What!?? You're kidding right?" Some people!

I really miss Ibuprofen.  I only rarely even bother with tylenol and every time I take it I remember why I don't bother - because it doesn't work anyway. I also miss melatonin which works great for insomnia, but you can't take it during pregnancy.

At least I can have tums.  I don't know what I'd do without tums for heartburn!

For both of my pregnancies I have vowed not to take any medicines at all including tylenol, tums, etc.  I never really do take pain meds as it is, but especially not now.  The other day I had the worst headache I think I have ever had, and I have no idea why, because I rarely get headaches.  I tolerated it for about 10 hours, then went to sleep for the night.  Thank goodness it was gone in the morning.  My back and neck have been killing me lately, I need to see the chiropractor and am thinking I should get a prenatal massage.  I really wish I would have done both of these things last time.  I couldnt imagine breaking a bone while pregnant and being unable to take anything tho!!

Because NSAIDs slow fracture healing time. It's a shame you weren't offered something a bit more substantial than paracetamol, that's just cruel.

I did end up getting a couple of x-rays.  The orthopedist was very sensitive to the fact that I am pregnant, and figured out the smallest area he needed to see, and the best angle instead of the several he would have normally ordered.  His staff wrapped me up in every shield they had on hand, not just the front, but my sides as well, and we even added the thyroid guard for good measure.  Even so it was nerve wracking.  Thankfully we got a good shot right away and quickly eliminated the need for surgery!

When I was carrying my son I broke/cracked/pulled a rib.  My doctor offered me a chest x-ray.  I asked her what the treatment was in each case, she said it would be the same if it was a pull or a break.  Why on earth would anyone choose to get a chest x-ray if there wouldn't be a drastic need for a specific treatment?!?  She seemed relieved that I turned it down.  I was horrified that she even suggested it.
