We just had a terrible vacation -- largely due to both kids not sleeping enough.  DDs are 4yo and 21mos, and neither have ever been the best sleepers.  Whenever we're away, I just can't settle them down, and they get to bed hours later than normal (ranging from 10:15-11:30 this past time), but wake up at their normal time (5:15-7:25).  They don't nap to make up for it -- even in the car or when nursed.  After just one night, the next day gets rough, and the following days only get worse.

This time we were in one motel room, but the same thing happens if we visit my parents.  It's less than a 3 hour drive to their house; we have two rooms there (because I won't stay otherwise). I bring some of their favorite stuffed animals.  I attempt the bedtime routine.  They're familiar with the house, we have regular meals, I start bedtime at about the same time; honestly, it's pretty boring there!

The combination of excitement and being away from home, not to mention DD1's spirited temperament keep us up way too late. I'm at a loss as to how to get them some rest.  There some things that did go surprisingly well this last time; I'd hate to strongly avoid spending the night away from home.  And yet, it just doesn't seem worth it.  Is there anything else I should be trying?  Do I have to wait for them to grow out of this?  Will they ever?  Will doing it more help, or just make me crazy?
