My 9yo ds had a rapid palatal expander for most of the last year.  It was removed about a month or so ago.  I was meticulous about cleaning his mouth.  We used a water pik and I used an irrigation syringe to shoot xylitol mouthwash up between the appliance and the palatal mucosa 2x/day.

Of course when they took the expander out, there was food mushed into the ridges of his palate.  The skin was white instead of pink on either side where the acrylic parts had been touching the palate.  It wasn't yeasty-white.  It just looked like it was irritated.

Over the next few weeks, the whiteness turned back to pink.  Then suddenly the white patches were back, this time with dark rddish-pink prickly spots, but only on one side of the palate.

Ds had a cleaning and the dentist said it looked like damage to the palatal salivary glands.  He took a picture and said to come back in 2 weeks.  It has been 1 week today and the marks have spread to the other side and gotten bigger all around.

We hav been referred to an oral surgeon.  Any and all BTDTs would be appreciated!
