So Canada's switch to digital television channels is happening August 30th. We do not have cable or satellite. We have new televisions with digital tuners and getting the channels that are available so far is no problem...the issue for us is being able to record shows which we still do with a dark ages vcr! Well it's mostly ds who records shows so I'm not really willing to pay for a whole bunch of channels we won't watch and a pvr and the service just to be able to record a few shows for ds on the one or two channels with the stuff he watches.

From what I gather you can't use a pvr without a cable or satellite service? I was wondering if you could buy one and then just manually set it up to record but it doesn't seem you can. I was looking at dvd recorders...does anyone know if that will be a good alternative to using a vcr? I am assuming you can use it in the same way to record shows from digital channels.

Any advice?
