would you vaccinate your children if...

you had access to single dose vaccines that did not contain any preservatives and a doc who followed a very delayed schedule?

Perhaps a few. If I felt I could trust the ingredients and the system, I'd be more inclined to consider it.

Single vaccines without preservatives already describes hepatitis B, rotavirus, Hib, pneumococcal, polio, single dose flu vaccines, chickenpox, and hepatitis A.

I have chosen not to give my children those vaccines on any schedule.

No - because it's much more than just preservatives that concern me about vaccines. Lots of vaccines currently don't contain preservatives. That doesn't mean they don't have alot of other objectionable ingredients.

good points. my knee jerk reaction was that i still wouldn't do it. even if there was absolutely nothing extra that was questionable in the vaccines, aside from the viruses themselves, of course, i still wouldn't vax my kids because vaxes bypass the natural immune system process and i don't like messing with mother nature. i did wonder if maybe i was being irrational.

it doesn't help that my mother is here helping out since i just had a baby and she's very adamant about the importance of vaxes. she's from the polio outbreak generation, or maybe just after when the vax was first available for widespread use, and she firmly believes in the vax even though she can't name one person who got extremely sick, was permanently disabled or died from polio. she really lets me have it about not vaxing my kids. irked.gif

if there was a vaccine that was made for my child (blood type, from her own tissue, no additives) maybe,  or an oral exposure of a "weakened" virus, so there may actually be an immune response and I can choose the time or place, then probably.

Actually that would be ideal.

If she is worried about your baby being the first person in the U.S. to get wild polio (not caused by the vaccine) since 1979 (32 years ago), maybe she should go out and buy some Lotto tickets (Actually, just one. No need to waste money on more). And give her my congratulations in advance.

If there is a polio outbreak, you'll hear about it, and you can consider the vaccine at that point.

Probably not.

I have 3 thoughts on this:

1.  I cannot envision a world where I think vaccines are totally safe.  It is too far outside reality to me.

2.  As a general rule, I intervene to treat things. I will give antibiotics for an infection.  I know there are side effects to antibiotics, but infections can be dangerous.  I weigh the risks/benefits of medicine and decide.   With vaccines there are no immediate benefits, as far as I know.  The child does not have anything - so you are taking a small risk for what?  The incredibly small chance they get something?  I happily do non invasive/risk free  preventative care (ok everybody - let's all wash our hands!) but I am uncomfortable doing more invasive stuff.  I am reminded of the medical saying "first do not harm."

3.  I want my kids to have some of the diseases.  I think they probably confer better immunity, and it may be that our bodies are meant to get sick and fight off stuff....it is good for us and might help prevent immune issues in general.

The only one I would consider is Rubella once my girls are old enough (late teens) and if they are not immune, because of the pregnancy risk. The Hep B shot may be necessary if they go into medicine, but even without those things, I still consider it dangerous to the average person.

no

Nope. Preservatives are only some the ingredients I find questionable. More to the point, I'm not impressed by the lack of double-blind placebo studies done on vaccines and the scare campaigns necessary to get people to buy them, nor do I trust the people who make and market them for public consumption. Anyone who has to resort to using fear to peddle their snake oil is not someone I'll be consulting for my family's medical needs.
