DD alternated between a crib mattress on the floor and her playpen, both in our room for about 6 months.  Then she went right to a twin with no rails in her own room.  We've also never had to lay down in there with her.  That completely shocked me b/c we had to lay on the crib mattress with her when she was in our room.
