I am a birth and postpartum doula currently taking Elizabeth Davis' Heart and Hands Midwifery Intensive and considering enrolling in the National Midwifery Institute to continue my studies.
I'm hoping to find an apprenticeship starting in December of this year or January of 2012. I'm currently living in Oakland, CA, but am hoping to move to an area of the country where I may get more experience in rural and/or low resource communities. I have been considering moving to Oregon, Montana, Colorado, Wyoming, the Dakotas, and Idaho, but am not stuck on any one location more than another.
At the moment, I don't know that I have a strong preference for apprenticing at a birth center or with home birth midwives only. I feel that I could use either training experience to my advantage with my future endeavors. The biggest component for me is forming a strong connection with my preceptor and finding someone with a diverse training background.
My ultimate goal is to work internationally as much as possible and eventually, to go to law school and focus on maternal care policies in crisis situations. Because of this, I would particularly love to work with midwives who travel internationally from time to time and/or are affiliated with organizations that help train midwives abroad.
I'd be very very grateful for any advice on finding an apprenticeship opportunity in these communities! If anyone knows of a midwife or practice looking for apprenticeships in the new year, I would LOVE to connect with them.
