Girl? - UPDATE

I just got back from my 17-week checkup. Baby is doing great. The doctor said it could be a girl, but he didn't want to call it for sure yet.

Here's the pic (um, I think this is the right one; I'm really bad at seeing anything in the ultrasound pics winky.gif). What do you think?

Absolutely looks like a girl to me, too!

I see the three white lines-- that looks like a clear picture of a girl to me :)

Based off of what I've seen in the past, I'd say girl, but the little pointer hand is right where you'd see something if it was a boy. And that part could have just not been in focus. Here's a boy picture for comparison.

Thanks, everyone. So, I guess the consensus is girl. I thought so, too. Esp. after looking around online at ultrasound pics, our pic looks very obviously a girl (though I guess you never know). But then I wonder why my doctor said he wasn't certain. He also wrote "XX?" on my checkup sheet under sex of baby. I guess he doesn't want to be wrong. orngtongue.gif

Regarding the finger pointer, the doctor must have added that to make things easier to spot because I didn't. So, I assume he wasn't covering potential boy parts because he had a look before adding it?

My husband still isn't entirely convinced it's a girl because the doctor didn't give us a definitive statement. Oh, and because this would be the first girl in his family in two generations. winky.gif

I guess I'll wait to shout "girl!" from the rooftops until the doctor makes it official.

Is your doctor the usual U/S tech?  It's very possible that he didn't want to "call it" since it's not his actual gig, yk?  With my last two kids the U/S lady told us she was absolutely positive on gender, but that's because she does that all day long.

I think AfricanQueen is right.  I know my doctor doesn't usually do the ultrasounds, so I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't totally positive on what the sex is.

Hmmm. I'm not sure. From my experience here, the doctors are the ones who always do the ultrasounds. I'm not sure if this applies to all of Europe (I've had pregnancy checkups in Germany & Switzerland only), or maybe it's because most people here seem to go to private offices rather than hospitals for checkups? It might be different at the big uni hospital in the city. From reading around, I've seen that a lot of doctors have some special training certificate (or whatever it is) in pregnancy ultrasounds.

Last pregnancy, my doctor in Germany referred me to another doctor for the 12-week scan. She was some specialist who did only the "special" diagnostic scans, I think, and my doctor said she often predicted sex at this scan. The specialist dr said I was about a week too early, and if I had come at 13 weeks, she may have been able to say.

DDCC - It sure looks like a girl! OB's are well trained to use ultrasounds, but they don't like to call it unless they are very sure. I had a tech not want to call mine when I got my anatomy scan with DD, and come to find out it was because some folks are litigious. Kind of a shame, but hopefully you can get a clearer picture next time you go in.

Litigious over sex of the baby being predicted wrong?! Man, what has our society come to...
