Pre-ejaculate fluid can contain sperm, so pulling out in not an effective method of preventing pregnancy.

Withdrawal can be a very effective form of contraception; dh and I have been using it with 100% effectiveness for over 10 years now. However, it depends on a few things:

- obviously your partner has to have very good self-control, so that he can withdraw in good time before ejaculation. I'd say 10-20 seconds is decent; some people (incl us) are cautious and say he should need some, um, manual help to finish

- you both have to be committed to avoiding

- and, very importantly, the rule we were taught is that you should abstain or use alternative protection if ejaculation has happened within the past 12 hours, because then, yes, there could still be some sperm lingering. If it's been longer than 12 hours, pre-ejaculate does not usually contain sperm--though (again) this obviously depends on the man's self-control :)
