What age do kids do well in a family bed until?

Sorry for two posts by me in a row... Anyway, my kids are 3.5 and 4.5 and we're trying for another right now and may be wanting more in the future if that's possible healthwise. We're going to be moving to a new house (cross fingers that our old house sells!!) and are wondering how to set things up. We will probably have a 3 bedroom. The logical, I suppose, would be to eventually end with a parents' bedroom, and a boys' room and a girls' room. But in the meantime, we'd like to have a family bedroom, a playroom / home-school / craft room, and a room for DH's stuff. (He is on the computer all the time but we want to have a rather screen-free early childhood for the kids.)

So, basically... I guess the question is, how old are kids when they start not liking the family bedroom idea anymore? I'm not saying necessarily we all have to sleep in one big bed, but at least putting all the beds in one spot seems like a good idea. Maybe a queen for the grown-ups and a king for the kids, or something like that. (Or twins for the kids, not sure.) When is it no longer OK? We also want to put a daybed or something like that in DH's room so we have some, um, privacy at some points... Ahum... But anyway, does that sound doable? And if so, how long before we would have to start thinking about private bedrooms?

TIA.

My girls are 6.5 and 4.5 and still very much enjoy being in bed with me.  We have 2 queen futons smashed together (we have a big master bedroom) and DH sleeps in one and the girls and I sleep in the other.  I regularly, though not always, curl up with dh for a while before crawling into bed with the girls.  DH and I aren't very compatible sleepers anyway.  One day I'll leave them over there, but dd2 still has potty issues and I don't sleep well too far away from them.  Besides the potty issues, I'd much rather be the nighttime parent from 3 inches away than from another room!

As far as intimacy, yes the extra bed is nice, but a twin is a bit.... cramped.  Go for the full bed or a queen and call it a guest bedroom.

Our family is pretty happy with the arrangement for now, though I admit, our half of the bed is getting a bit squeezy.
