HELP PLEASE! Need info on Newport News, Va area

My husband has been given a fantastic job opportunity in Newport News.  My dad lives near this area and drove over to explore the area.  He didn't have that great of a report.  He said there were a lot of "bad parts" that were really dangerous...

I just want to know if it a good place for families who are into the outdoors, sports, and anything fun!!!

Anyone live in this area??  I need straightforward opinions from mothers and fathers.  My dad is almost 70, so I'm not sure he is the best source of advice.

We are going to visit soon- but really want other's impressions.

We live in Virginia Beach and love it. Chesapeake is great too. Like most areas there are good and bad parts to most towns. I highly recommend coming and visiting and seeing what areas you like in relation to where the job site is :) I do know there is a TON to do here that is outside :)

Hi!

I live in Newport News, and yes there are bad parts.  Especially downtown near the ship yard.  But there are many wonderful and safe areas too!  Try to find a place near Ft. Eustis which will put you near Newport News Park.  The park is huge with many trails, play grounds, camping, and an awesome frisbee golf course!  Hope that helps!  The farther north you are in Newport News the better!

Are there any specific neighborhoods you're considering? I'm there a lot and would be happy to take photos or give you my honest opinion.  The PP is right, I'd definitely stay as far north as possible.  Maybe consider Grafton/Yorktown if you can find something in your price range.  If you're open to a small drive, there are nearby areas that are technically Williamsburg that are nice, and you can also venture north to Gloucester Point/ Hayes (where I live) if you want something more rural but still accessible.

Feel free to PM me, I really don't mind helping!

Where does your dad live?  Where will your DH be working?  Those are factors that can play in....

We're moving to the area this fall! I also have a million questions...about housing, groceries, raw milk, kid friendly winter activities, crunchy mommy playdte groups, etc. Is anyone available to be my Virginia mentor...I pay with vegan brownies!

There are bad neighborhoods everywhere. We have traveled to many places as a military family and I can honestly say that the Hampton/Newport News area has been one of our favorites. There is so much to do here and much of it is free. I hope you get to come!
