How do I become a lactation consutant or AP educator?

Hi, I am really interested in getting a job at some point where I can help pregnant or new moms to learn about breastfeeding and AP.  How do I get started as a lactation consultant or teach about AP?  I am very passionate about these things and would love to have a career with them...anyone else doing these things or thinking about them?  Thanks :)

On IBCLC's website, they have the different pathways listed on how you can qualify. The hours of breastfeeding support are usually the hardest to come by unless you have a job that allows you to easily get them. Options could be becoming a breastfeeding counselor, if you were ever on WIC then some clinics train you to become a bfing counselor for WIC. I'm not sure about an AP educator. As an IBCLC who works in a non-hopsital setting, and therefore has more time to spend with my moms, I "dispense" a lot of AP info. winky.gif

Thanks Peony...yes I think I would like to do it like you do and do it in a non-hospital setting where I could add some helpful AP tips lol.  I will check out the website.  I have no experience with nursing, is that something I need? Thanks so much!!!
