Pros/Cons to moving to Houston?

Hello mamas,

My Dh may have an opportunity for a job in Houston. We were hoping for CA but that fell through :(

We live in Iowa now and I really don't like the hot humid summers so the idea of Houston HOT summers is depressing!

But I'm really tired of the conservative small minded attitudes and miss the culture, shopping, and recreation the larger metro areas offer. Heck, we have to drive over 2 hrs now for Costco and Trader Joe's. And I'm sooooo sick of the bugs here! The mosquitos and gnats are bad enough to drive a person nuts in the spring and summer.

So tell me the pros/cons of living in Houston please and help me decide if I should suffer through the summers for all the other benefits or pass on this job and wait for another...

Thanks in advance!

I moved to Houston 2 and half years ago from Canada and we love it here.  The summers are hot but we got a house with a pool and AC so it's totally tolerable.  And the trade off is a whole winter that you can spend enjoying the outdoors.  We can go to the park in December!  There is a ton of great stuff to do here, shopping, museums, concerts, professional sport events, pretty much anything you want to do.  The locals sometimes complain about the mosquitoes here but obviously they've never been to northern Canada in the summer, then you have mosquitoes!!  However they do have disgusting large bugs of other kinds, roaches and spiders and whatnot.  Depending on where you live you may face the same small minded conservatism, this is Texas after all.  winky.gif
