at a loss. what to feed LO.

Thread Starter

LO is 6 months old and seems to be rejecting sucking on a bottle and now prefers a regular cup. Thats fine with me but my next problem is that she is wanting finger food BBAAAADDDD! BUT she has no teeth. What the heck do I feed a kid then? haha. She likes holding her own pancake and enjoys feeding herself her baby mummums and she stares down my sandwich like, 'if only i could chew...'

Any suggestions? TIA

At that age my DS really loved avocado, steamed carrots, and steamed broccoli. Broccoli, especially since that handy veggie comes with a handle. lol You can also try cubes of sweet potato. That was one of my DD's favorites when she was little.

They can mash stuff up pretty good even with no teeth!

We do: cucumber sticks, mango slices, halved peaches, cubed and steamed/boiled veggies, tomato wedges, etc.

Pretty much anything that is reasonably soft and able to be held in a fist is a good option for six months. As soon as it clicks that, "Oh, hey, this is food," they'll get really creative with techniques to appropriately ingest the stuff. Google "baby led weaning" or search here on the forums for lots of other ideas!

Ds didn't get teeth until just before his 1st birthday & he could eat almost anything (raw carrots & other hard veggies like that he couldn't handle). We started with things that are really soft like bananas, avocado, cooked sweet potatoe, etc. & as he became more competent we gave him more & more of what we were having. At about 9 months I gave him a strip of steak thinking he could gum & suck it for the flavour - looked over & it was GONE. After that he got whatever we were having.

Pretty much any fruit (J could even have a good go at a slice of apple pre-teeth) and vegetables we steamed or baked until they were soft.

I love it when people tell me this.  DD at 16 months STILL refuses to bite or chew things :(  I guess "can" and "will" are two very different things in the baby world.

Anyway, DD used to really like baked apples.  Very soft, and way better than other ways of cooking apples.

When DD started on solids, we did applesauce (she could lick it off her fingers), heavily steamed carrots cut into tiny cubes and peas with the skin removed. Avocado is often good, but it's thick, so watch out for gagging and it can also be an allergen, so watch out for tummy troubles.

I was always surprised how much DS could chew even before he had any teeth.

Really soft stone fruits are great and in season now! Very messy and sticky, but soft and slurpy!

Mine is 6.5 months old and is waaaaay more interested in our food than my first DS ever was. This one is literally Pavlov's dog watching us eat. I agree with the stone fruits (peaches, nectarines), He LOVES to eat off of mine (he just kind of gums off some of it while I hold it) or I cut one into quarters and let him hold it and gnaw on it. Apples, too. Someone told me quartered oranges were great for that, too, I just haven't bought one yet. I tried the heel of a piece of bread the other night when we were in a restaurant and he liked that, too. I do let him practice with some of the organic puffs too. He rarely gets any in his mouth but he completely understands what they are there for and tries very hard with them. When he's a little more handy with his fingers I'll let him try some regular finger food.

Absolutely!

DD loves spinach with pears, baked apples, bananas, avocado, mango, sweet potato with apricot (I just baked and mashed them together), chickpeas, kidney beans, shredded chicken, broccoli, ground turkey, green beans...

Lol, thanks a lot. Now I'm hungry!
