Pretty sure I accidentally confirmed a dairy sensitivity...

My LO has had digestive issues - weird stools (but not always), mucous (but not always), and occult blood (everytime we've checked) - that have led me to believe she has some food sensitivities. She doesn't have any classic allergy symptoms, so I think it's not a true allergy.

So I've been weaning myself off of dairy (what little I ate - mostly cheese) and soy. I had put together that her super mucousy stools came after I ate edamame, and she seemed worse after milk (I rarely drink it straight) or ice cream. I finally stopped ALL forms of soy and dairy as of Tuesday, 8/9. I was checking restaurant menus, ingredients, everything. I'm 99% sure I had no dairy or soy from Tuesday morning till Sunday afternoon.

I had stayed home from church with the kids, but DH went out to lunch with our friends/family, and brought home take-out from the normal Chinese place. We eat some sort of Asian food pretty much every Sunday, so quitting my normal soy-coated chicken dish was my first step. But, when I did that, I wasn't yet fully avoiding dairy, so I'd had crab puffs (cream cheese-filled wonton wrappers with either shrimp or crab), although I'd almost switched that for a non-dairy item. Not thinking about it, DH ordered the exact same thing and brought it home to me. Knowing that I'd already picked these items based on what I could eat, I never even thought about eating the crab puffs... and the cream cheese. Ugh. greensad.gif

So that was Sunday, mid-afternoon. Monday, Eliana woke up a little sniffly. I'm guessing she's starting to get a cold, and she definitely has more mucous than normal (normal is none, except some dry or when crying). She also takes a really long nap (me, too!) and then is tired fairly soon again, after. But this evening, she had a dirty diaper - #3 for the day? - and it was green (they've been a good, yellow-ish color lately). Her skin was super red wherever it touched and very tender. And, there was mucous in the stools, where even earlier today, there wasn't.

Her reactions have tended to be about a day after (i.e., I ate Edamame on Saturday night, and Monday morning she began having very mucousy stools), so I'm guessing that's what this is. I wouldn't say she's been 100% fine in the last few days, but I have a general feeling that we've been tending towards less mucous, less irritation with stools, etc.

I can't say for sure that the congestion is related. If it is, that seems like a much stronger reaction than she's had in the past.

Anyway, does this sound like a definite reaction to the dairy? I am so bummed to have reintroduced it at this point. I'm leaving town (with her) on Saturday, and was thinking I'd have her stools checked on Friday to see if they were better (though the occult blood test isn't quantitative). I will not have as much control over my diet while I'm out of town (though I'll hopefully be able to stay DF/SF), so I wanted to give her as much "clean" time to heal as I could. Blargh. greensad.gif

I'm curious about the crab as well.
