Resources for investigating wheat intolerance/allergy in adult?

I am not at all sure this is what's going on with me, but it just occurred to me tonight. I have had GI issues off and on for the last couple of years, and kind of always intermittent issues with my bowels, especially really intense bloating around the time I ovulate until I get my period (which is kind of almost half of the time, right?) Recently I have had a bad week long bout and I am just wondering if this is part of my issue. It seems simple enough to address also so I figured why not try. My mom had a wheat allergy (I say had because she was off of it for a good 2 years but then started adding it back slowly without much issue...but when she first figured it out she had broken out in hives...so it does seem like it was a legit allergy). I also read it can cause headaches. I have suffered from headaches since I was a kid. I am not super hopeful that those are caused by wheat...but again...what can it hurt to try?

Does anyone care to share stories of adult wheat intolerance/allergy...what kind of symptoms you had...resources to check out...what to do next. Just quit the wheat cold turkey?

thanks!!

There's a difference between going off wheat and off all gluten. And you could always rule out a wheat allergy by getting tested at an allergist. Intolerance is a whole different ballgame. One thing you could do is a food journal (might help pinpoint headache causes). I can tell you that when I went off gluten (and dairy and soy at the same time), my back spasms went away that the doctor thought was fibromyalgia (yet none of the meds were working). And my menstrual migraines went away as well. It's difficult at first, but after three years, it's second nature to read all the ingredient lists every time. Good luck!
