Working mom not wanting to vaccinate - daycare???

Hi all,

I am brand new to this forum. I am a RN and am 99 percent sure I am not vaccinating my now 2 month old son. I am hearing a lot on both sides as to why I should or shouldn't vaccinate, and am starting to run into possible issues getting my son into daycares and schools. Anybody have any advice on how to go about getting him in with no problems? (there is no reaction history or religious exemption with our family on which to go off of for exemption forms).

Also, is there anyone that has not vaccinated their children and still used daycares and public schools? Did they get anything serious or were you worried about your children getting anything serious from others? The reason I ask is because the only friends of mine that are not vaccinating are able to stay home with their children and homeschool, so they do not need daycare or public schools. My husband and I both have professional careers and at this time staying home with our son is not an option. I wish it was, but it's not. And, I do not want to homeschool my son as we both are huge into socializing and sports/staying active and want to give my son that same thing.

Thanks so much for any advice you may have for me!!!

I don't know how the daycare system works, but for schools, there should be no reason you would have to home school.  All states have exemptions,  Mississippi and West Virgina are the only two states without Religious exemptions.

The is a campaign currently underway trying to put up bill boards that say "No Shots, No School, NOT TRUE"

Edit to add:  most states don't require you to be part of a certain religion, you just have to state that is in conflict of your religious beliefs.  (I know many who don't even believe in God who use the religious exemption because their state doesn't offer a Philosophical one. )

Welcome!

I see you are in Virginia. If your son will be attending any daycare center or school licensed through the state of VA then they HAVE to accept a religious exemption. If it is just a lady taking care of kids in her house, but the daycare is not officially licensed then they would not have to accept an unvaccinated child if they were not comfortable with it. All you need to do is submit this form and have it notarized: http://www.vdh.state.va.us/epidemiology/immunization/documents/SchoolRegulations/cre_1.pdf

I have a 3 year old son who has been in daycare since he was 3 months old. We too are a working family and one of us staying home is not an option. My son has had his share of illness, but nothing that would be prevented by a vaccine. Colds, coughs, viruses ect. I am into natural medicine and work very hard and optimizing his immune system and feeding him organic, healthy foods. I feel confident that should he get a VPD, we could handle it just fine. It would probably mean missing alot of work, but that is a choice we have made and understand that is a possibility. Ive missed alot of work already just taking care of him when he has a respiratory illness so there ya go!

Thanks so much for your replies and advice!

Marnica, did you or do you give him supplements to help boost his immune system? I am wondering what and when I can start.

Will you be sending him to public schools also?

I love your quote by the way!

Yes he is on supplements. Daily he takes a quality multi, vitamin c, probiotics, CLO, Vit D and iron (he has low iron) He also takes digestive enzymes as he has some food sensitivities/issues. He also takes homeopathic remedies and other supplements/herbs when he is ill. I really can't remember when I started with supplements. We have worked with an ND since he was 10 weeks old. We have done and continue to do homeopathic prophylaxis for him. I know I gave Vit D and C since he was an infant. I also breastfed him until 2.5 - BF is a huge boost to the immune system. If you are doing it, do it as long as you can. Since I worked, I pumped alot and it was a pain, but totally worth it!

Yes, he will be attending public school. We actually just enrolled him in preschool which is private obviously (he starts in 3 weeks!) and the religious exemption form was a part of the enrollment packet. It was so refershing!!

Where i live ND's are licensed so yes, my insurance does cover ND's. Virginia does nto license ND's at this time so I imagine it would not be covered but Im not sure.
