Now I remember why I use a midwife

My sister had a 3rd-degree tear with her birth 3 weeks ago.  Nothing wrong with that (except it would majorly suck), it happens.  Until I found out why - the OB was down there STRETCHING her with his hands.  Hands.  Plural.  When she told him to stop because it was hurting worse than the labor pains, did he stop like a normal person?  No, he numbed her up with Novocaine so she wouldn't feel it.  And oh, look, a 3rd-degree tear!  I'm so pissed on her behalf!  Baby wasn't in distress, nothing was wrong, except she had been pushing for longer than he'd like   Gah, I told her next time she needs a midwife.  At home.  Don't know if she'll listen, but maybe I planted a seed...

That is very unfortunate, I am not a fan of Drs.  If she gets pregnant again I would buy Ina Mays Guide to Childbirth for her and tell her that you heard it is a great book or something, I really like it and I really wish I would have read it with my first pregnancy.  My Dr also caused me a severe tear and almost paralyzed my baby during delivery.

My midwife with my first did the same thing.  DH said I tore right where she was stretching and it made him wince with pain when it happened. If she had left well enough alone I probably would have had just a tiny tear instead.

All types of care providers can suck and others can be the best in their field. 

Sorry your sister's doc did that and I hope she's able to find a care provider who is more hands off next time.
