Suddenly having lots of potty misses in a trained toddler

DS is 2.  He started being reliably dry in trainers during the day about 2 months ago.  He still wears a diaper at night, but is dry about 80% of the time at night.  The past 3 days we've suddenly had 2-3 full on pants wetting incidents a day.  Previously, we'd get a leak occasionally before he realized he had to go, but that wasn't even every day.  Nothing major has changed in his life or diet recently (though it will on Monday when I go back to school after having the summer off).  Is there any other reason for this I should be thinking about?

Is he becoming more verbal right now? I know that at age two, my son's verbal abilities really took off and we also had a couple short potty regressions around then. (We did EC from birth, using diapers for backup until 12-15 months).  In fact, in retrospect I can see that nearly every potty regression corresponded with one or another period of development or growth (getting new teeth, walking, etc). I wouldn't worry too much...I think their brains are just preoccupied with mastering other important skills!

His language skills have been developing a ton all summer long, but I haven't noticed any recent spikes.  He's doing a little better these last couple of days, but I'm also being more vigilant about watching the clock and taking him proactively.
