Help me get ds to sleep!

We are UP/CL family here, so for the most part there is no actual bedtime, but at around 8-8:30ish I will mention to the kiddo's that it's getting late and we should think about heading upstairs. The issue I'm having is with ds(4.5), he refuses to even think about sleep until around 9:30-10ish, until that time he will normally either play quietly upstairs or shadow me whilst I'm cleaning downstairs, I wouldn't have a problem with this except that he gets up at around 7-7:20, and a few times during the week we have to wake up at 6 to take dh into work(1 car family). DS does usually take a 60-90min nap most days, but I'm concerned that he's not getting enough sleep. I've tried using nvc and explaining to him that I'm concerned about his sleep, and also am needing some time alone at the end of the day, but he doesn't want things to change so isn't really helping me out with any suggestions here....

Help would be appreciated!

quite a few people told me to try melatonin.   I don't give my kids anything... EVER!  However I tried .5 mg of melatonin, all this week before school started and Holy heck.  DD is 8 and going to bed at her bedtime.  We still co sleep so I lay down with them until they fall asleep and then I get up.  It's been amazing.  What's even more amazing is how nicely she wakes up.  The perfect amount of good sleep.  It's been a total change in a week.  And wow has her mood been wonderful.
