Hello all! Ds is almost 7, starting 2nd grade. He is extremely bright, but the report form school for years has been that he lacks focus, can be impulsive, and disrupts at times. He is seen for private OT for SPD. I've been resisting the ADHD label for a while, because I feel like his SPD results in ADHD "look alike" behaviors. But then I consider that maybe that's the case for a lot of people, and maybe ADHD is just one presentation of SPD.
I'm at a loss. I have to work part time this year, and I have a 21 month old at home when I am not working; otherwise, I'm at the point that I would just pull him and homeschool him. I, personally, am at my wit's end in terms of the stress it causes me to send him and dread the report home everyday - "can't focus, needed to tell him direction multiple times thoughout the day, didn't complete his work, had to work in another room/principal's office..." I know he's not an easy kid to teach - believe me, I know! But he's a good kid, and he means so well.
So now I'm looking at getting the ADHD dx for sure in order to get accommodations in school. At this time, I'm not ready to take the medication leap. He is incredibly sensitive to meds, and I worry a lot about the side effects on him. In case we need to move that direction down the road, I want to become as educated as possible about the various drugs' effects, side effects, safety records, efficacy, etc. Can anyone here help talk to me about meds that they have experience with - benefits (or, possibly, lack of), side effects, dosages, more- and less-controvertial meds, etc.? I'd really appreciate some input as I consider the options ahead of us.
