Ketogenic diet for seizures

My daughter is 4 and has cerebral palsy and severe epilepsy. We have tried medications, but the doctor may now put her on the ketogenic diet to control her seizures. I wonder if anyone has any experience with this.

Fortuntately, we already eat a gluten-free diet (strict for me, moderate for the rest of the family) and follow the Weston A. Price recommendations, so I feel like it won't be a huge leap from where we are.

Hoping to hear your experiences on eating this way, meal planning, and mostly if this has worked for your child's seizures.

Thanks!

I don't have experience with my own children, but I worked with a child with a mitochondrial disorder and resulting seizures on a ketogenic diet.  It worked really well with her and she had a major reduction in seizures and also less lactic acidosis.  Her mom incorporated a lot of the right fats into the meal planning by using rich sauces and dressings, shakes, etc.  Our family used to follow the Weston A Price diet (not so much, now, I have SLE and resulting kidney problems that didn't seem to do well with quite so high a fat diet), and I think you're right that there's not such a big difference.  Wish I knew more, it would be neat to hear from one of the moms who used it.

My daughter used to have Infantile Spasms, she grew out of them, but when we were going through it I belonged to an Infantile Spasm forum and a lot of children had great success with this diet. These were children who had tried most of the standard drugs. Maybe you can find more useful help going to a forum specifically for epilepsy? Good luck! I think it is a great idea.
