Tics?

How common is it for toddlers to have little tics?

DD kind of holds her breath and then grunts voicelessly.  Is this a tic?  What would you call it?  She has been doing this for about 4 months.  It happens all day, but it is hardly noticeable if you aren't listening for it.

She also hums when she eats something that she agrees with.

How old is she? Does the grunting have to do with using her diaper? Is she otherwise developmentally appropriate? Toddlers are weird little people, a couple of mine have hummed when they had something they liked like food.

My DS has some facial tics which are being evaluated for possible seizures. I did read that tics are pretty common for toddlers & will generally disappear on their own in a few months, especially if you don't draw attention to it. Can she control it (i.e. if you distract her while she's doing it, can she stop doing it)? I'm not sure whether what you're describing is a vocal tic, I can't really picture it, but it could be... could also be self-stimming behavior... DS has some vocal things he does that I guess would be self-stimming.. not really tics because he can control them... they seem more about focusing his attention or drowning out things he doesn't like. Some of them he has done since birth, though I never really thought about it 'til just now as I was posting this!
