Homeschooling but IQ testing through school?

Has anyone here had their home schooled gifted child evaluated through the public school? I ask because we just moved to an area with a lot more opportunities for gifted kids, but you have to have the IQ score as proof to attend the special camps and stuff. I want to give dd every opportunity but it would be nice to not have to pay for the test out of pocket. Oh, and I believe that dd has disgraphia which may or may not complicate the issue.

Dd is 9, and we have never done any kind of testing before.

I can't speak to your question, but I wanted to offer another idea. Many of these programs will accept the EXPLORE test as an out of level test. It is a group test - like a pre pre ACT. It is sometimes given to 4-6th graders as a way to qualify for gifted programs. Depending on where you live it may be an inexpensive and low hassle way to get some acheivement testing. http://www.hoagiesgifted.org/talent_search.htm

Yes, you can have your child evaluated, but you may not get a full scale IQ.  If you give them a written request to evaluate your child because of concerns about disgraphia and learning differences, I believe this is true in all states, then they have to test her.  But they may not give her full IQ, just enough to know she isn't BELOW average.

If you are looking for a cheaper way to test, perhaps go through your local college (where students do the testing with supervision) or Children's hospital.  However, a few hundered dollars for testing may pay off in the end for a good private evaluation, including disgraphia and other learning issues that could show up.

Ditto this.

My Dd got evaled through  the local schools....they stopped the IQ testing after she hit 'average' since they were only looking for deficits. Our state does not mandate GT identification- some states do. Worth exploring.

Thank you for the thoughts! I had not heard of the Exploer test, and had not considered testing at a college, both very helpful ideas! I did not realize most schools stopped testing at average IQ-that is awful, because it limits the view of the child they get from the testing.
