Infant GER

Thread Starter

My 4 week old baby just got diagnosed with GER.  He is exclusively breastfed.  I have a powerful letdown that I can't really feel so he gets a lot of gas (DS #1 got a lot of gas but didn't have GER).  The Ped prescribed Zantac but I'd prefer to not go this route since the baby is gaining weight & thriving.

I read all the info about keeping the baby upright more, raising mattress, etc.  Are there any natural remedies that you can recommend?

You can also follow certain feeding techniques to minimize the air swallowing and milk overload during the letdown. As for a remedy, one thing that comes to mind is a lactase digestive enzyme. The theory behind that is that with your overactive letdown, the baby may be getting more fore-milk which is higher in milk sugar. This milk sugar (lactose) overload would then turn into gas further down in the GI tract. Giving this digestive enzyme with every feeding will help digest the lactose. This may improve things enough to decrease the GER. Maybe.  You can check this product out at www.Colief.com . Also, you've done some diet elmination?  Also, giving an infant probiotic daily may help.
