Insurance Question- maternity coverage

DH and I wanted to TTC baby #2 this cycle.  I will be ovulating around August 31st.  The problem is that my new medical insurance plan with maternity coverage does not go into effect until Sept. 1st.  Pregnancy cannot be a "preexisting condition" under my insurance.  But if I conceive on Aug. 31st, I wouldn't really be pregnant until implantation a week or so later, right?

I wish I had switched plans sooner, but I called early August to switch and I didn't know you had to wait until the 1st of the following month!

I just don't want to have to skip this cycle purposely because of this because I'm getting very anxious to TTC (I've been ready since January but finally got DH to agree to TTC now).  But maybe it is best to wait until next cycle just in case.  greensad.gif  What do you gals think?

I wouldn't think that the insurance companies would be able to pin down ovulation or implantation enough to say that you were 'pregnant' when the insurance started.  I would think that once you test and are pregnant after Sept 1, then you would be covered under the maternity plan.  I say it's a go!  Good luck, mama!

I agree, I don't think they will know that you O'd August 31, and hey you may not O on that day, we all know sometimes it doesn't go as planned! I say you are good to go!

Ohhhh that was the answer I wanted to hear!!  smile.gif  DH may be a little nervous about it though, so we'll see if I can talk him into trying in a week!

Federal law actually protects pregnancy from being a pre-existing condition (even if your health insurance didn't), also as far as I can tell, most insurance companies count you as pregnant when you go for your first prenatal appointment. thumb.gif

Thanks GradStudent- I don't really understand all the laws related to health insurance!  I just know that I called the insurance co. and they said that I needed to switch to the plan with maternity coverage BEFORE getting pregnant in order to be covered.  I read that when switching health insurance plans, pregnancy would be covered if on a group plan.  But this is an individual health insurance plan so I've read that the laws are different.

It sounds like it's safe to TTC right away, so that's exciting. smile.gif Just hope that DH is really ready to go (even though he already said we can start now, I can see him changing his mind to say, "How about in one or two more months?").  I don't want to push him when he's not ready, but I feel like I've been waiting so long for him to say he's ready and I don't want the kids to be too far apart in age!  Oh well, I'm just taking one month at a time.  Thanks for all the replies, and good luck to all of you TTC right now!
