Ever since my teens, I've been really annoyed by the sound of people eating, blowing their noses, and clearing their throats. Â When I was about 20, I used to joke that I was going to open up my own silent movie theater--no popcorn allowed. Â (Why on earth do they serve such a noisy snack when you're trying to watch a movie? ;)) It's gotten progressively worse--and sadly, I am most annoyed by my own family members--even my children. Â I thought, to be honest, I was crazy and it was just something I had to live with. Â Well, I just found out that it's a real condition called misophonia.
Â
I'm wondering if anybody else suffers from it and has found any success in treatment? I've heard anti-anxiety meds may help. Â I literally can't stand to be around my own children when they eat--and it's so awful. Â I always tell them to eat quietly even on things they can't really help like potato chips or popcorn. Â This morning I had to leave the room when they were eating their cereal because the sound of the spoon hitting the bowl (even though it was plastic) drove me insane.
