Discovered my daughter has a pretty neat talent

She just turned 8 last month. When I spell a word (no matter how fast) 9 times out of 10 she knows what word I've spelled. I randomly picked words and put them on a list that she couldn't see. I suspect she is dyslexic, but is it possible for a dyslexic child to be able to do this? For instance the word dandelion, I don't think while reading she would be able to read that word. But yet if I spell it she knows  what I'm spelling.

I'm jealous.

I had no idea what words you were spelling in the video. I just can't do it. If you go slow, and I picture the letters written down, I'm good. But just saying them? Nope. It's made for some humorous moments when my DH is trying to be sneaky and spelling something simple out in front of the kids, and after the 3rd time I ask him to slow down and repeat it and my DD will say, "He spelled ____, Mom!"

I recently discovered my DD could do this.  She has read hundreds and hundreds of the words in this manner.  From your video, she has done "crazy," monster," "flower," "window," and "book."  Today she did "fireplace." (And, then there are words she can never get right "red" is always "read" and "cat" is always "sat.")  It is something that really gives me pause.  I even posted about this "peculiar skill" on the Davidson website, (DD is also an early reader.)  FWIW I think it highlights DD's great auditory-sequential strengths.

I wanted you to know that my DD has a documented vision problem.  And, so I do wonder if this "neat talent" has anything to do with that.  Because she has strabismus, she has trouble keeping her left eye working with her right.  We would never have known if not for a slight outward turn every now and then.  We are talking millimeters.  And, she rubs her eyes like crazy.

Yeah, I'm not good at this either. I can spell fine out loud but if somebody spells to me I just don't get it. And I've tried spelling to dh but English is his 2nd language and of course dd picks up on it no matter what. This is why we've stopped spelling and speak dh's native language so the kiddos won't know what we're saying. lol

Thank you for the link you sent me. I'm going to look into it.

I know my daughter has difficulties with directionality and tracking. It's just unknown if the tracking is due to a vision issue (despite the fact she has 20/20 vision) or if she has dyslexia. She is struggling to read so that is why I think it is so odd that she is able to do this.

I was never dislexic, but when I was a child, I used to tell myself words backwards and I ended up being a REALLY good speller.
