Frozen breastmilk

Thread Starter

I know that it is not a good idea to let breastmilk thaw and then refreeze it after it has been frozen once, however...

The hurricane knocked out our power for several days, and in order to save my breastmilk stock from the freezer, I transported it to a friend's freezer who still had power.  The problem is that while en route, the milk began to thaw slightly-- it was mostly (like 85-90%) frozen still.  I threw it in the freezer and allowed it to refreeze.

Is all that milk bad?  It was a lot of milk, and I'd be very upset to see it wasted.

I had a similar issue a few months ago. The difference was that the milk defrosted almost entirely. Here is the thread I started. I decided to use the milk. I was supper careful about smelling and tasting it before I made a bottle. DD reacted to it. She stopped sleeping, was super fussy during the day and was having major spit ups. I stopped giving it to her and tossed the milk. You can say that maybe what was happening to her was a coincidence. I don't know. It made me very upset. I think in your case you will be just fine because the milk was still pretty frozen. hug2.gif

i would make sure to mark those bags so that you know which ones they are and taste them when you thaw them and feed them right away when you thaw them and watch for signs of any issues like hte previous lady had. but in general i think you are going to be ok.

had you left them in your freezer and let them thaw then it would have been garbage.

I saw specific instructions about this (for the hurricane) somewhere... will try to find and post.

(Me, I'd do what Adorkable said.)
