Flax seed oil for eczema=gas?

This was the second day I have tried giving my daughter some flax seed oil for her eczema (She's a week shy of 5 months.) Tonight she had the most horrible gas attack - crying and rigid for three hours with little naps in between. She wouldn't let me massage her tummy at all, which usually helps. So now I am afraid to give her any more flax seed oil.

Is this just a coincidental fluke, or has this happened to anyone else? Her eczema is really bad, on her face and her elbows, and I am trying to avoid any type of cortisone.

She was adopted and is bottle-feeding, so I can't take the flax oil myself and get it to her through breastmilk.

Flax oil could do that. She seems a little young to get it- maybe someone else knows more than me on this.

I have not tried to give it to my boys, but I do know that flax seed oil makes me VERY gassy! I tried to take the oil as a supplement but had such horrible gas pains and sometimes diarrhea I had to stop. So if this happened to me as an adult, I would think she may be reacting the same. I take one tablet now per day and that is all I can handle. The seeds seemed to be a bit easier on my stomach.

Ive been taking it for years and never had any gas from it. But maybe my body is used to it?
You probably should not give it to a 5 months old except maybe a drop or two.

My grandson takes a teaspoon full every day and no problem. HE LIKE IT! He is 6 yrs. old though.

Thanks for all your replies. I am just not going to give it to her for now, and the topical stuff (calendula and eucerin) I am using seems to be working now. There was no mention of the gas side effect from anyone until you all. There was just mention of the possibility of loose stools, and she gets constipated, so I thought it may tackle two issues. The Omega oil that really works for eczema is GLA. This can be found in Borage oil, Black Currant Oil, and Evening Primrose Oils. I use Borage because it has the highest amount of GLA. It has CURED...let me say it again, CURED my horrible eczema (along with cutting out dairy and eggs when I went vegan.)

So there are three types of oil you can try on her. The dose of Borage for an adult is only 1/4 teaspoon per day, so for a baby must be VERY small.

I would definitely try it. My husband used to call me Lizard Hands, and I'd have to cover them with gauze they were so gross and painful. Now I hvae beautiful skin and no problems. Let me knwo if you want more info, such as medical info on the oils.

I'd love info on the oils. DS is 16 months and has eczema flareups from time to time. I'd love to find something that really helps.

We started on flax seed oil again. She is seven and a half months now, and I am just giving her five drops in her food. This is the second day, and there have been no bad reactions. We'll see what happens. I will try the other oils if she does not improve. I do not think this is a food allergy. She was tested and is not allergic to any of the common allergens in her life. I think sunlight helps her too.

Thanks Emily! I looked up dosing, and it said 1 ml/10lbs for the oils you suggested.
