Kidney Reflux in Infant and Antibiotics

Our new little son has been diagnosed with a condition called reflux, wherein urine flows back into the kidneys. This is a condition spotted prenatally via ultrasound but one for which there was nothing we could do until after birth. In short, it is a hopefully self-correcting condition that does not seem painful to the little guy, but it makes it imperative that we help him avoid urinary tract infections and related troubles until his system corrects. The top recommended practice seems to be to put the little guy on a low dose of antibiotics (in this case amoxicilian) to suppress possible bacterial infection while we keep an eye on how kidneys and system heals and corrects over time. In this case, the doc suggests our son be on amoxicilian now for a full year with monitoring...possibly five!

This seems so scary to us, but web research is showing this is the first and most recommended line of treatment. Wondering if there are any parents out there who have experience with this reflux and/or with a w/holistic lean who might have some suggestions for what I/we be doing in order to support his system in healing (and hopefully not being on antibiotics very long).

I am already taking probiotic (supplement and some yogurt) in hopes of passing some of that via breast milk, but it makes me so very upset to be giving this tiny being the "pink stuff" every night (going on a week and a half now).

Any thoughts, suggestions, references most welcome.

I'd dose the baby directly with probiotics. Give them half way between the doses (if you can a little three hours out couldn't hurt...I do both with my son when he's on antibiotics. Make sure the probiotic you're taking is quality/proven to colonize.

This is the one I would do for the baby. http://www.protherainc.com/prod/proddetail.asp?ID=K-TIF You can purchase of Amazon or at other places. They sell probiotics for adults too. They are very good, proven probiotics.
