Need new food or recipe ideas, please! Allergies plus texture aversion.

I'd love to try some new foods with my DS, but I'm feeling uninspired. Okay, trodden down actually describes it better. Does anyone have any ideas?

The problem is that he's got a number of food allergies and sensitivities, as well as huge texture aversion.

These are his food allergies/sensitivities:
Citrus (orange, lemon, etc)
Grape
Berries (all kinds)
Banana
Apricot
Cow Dairy
Rice
Oat
Black Pepper
Cinnamon
Peanuts
We also don't do soy, except a little lecithin is okay.

However, he CAN have goat dairy of all kinds, eggs, wheat, corn, cashews, almonds, walnuts, sesame, (but not sure on pecans yet). He can also have apple, pear, plum, mango, papaya, pineapple, and guava. Honey is fine too.

The kinds of things he does eat are bread and bread-like products (like muffins, waffles, all homemade of course.) Nut butter and mango jam sandwiches. Goat cheddar sandwiches. He will eat nut butter or cheese on Late July Crackers. Homemade pizza on homemade bread. Pasta and homemade tomato sauce (smooth of course). Omelet with goat cheddar only, nothing else. I can sometimes get him to eat a flatbread (Lavash) sandwich with melted goat cheddar, a little honey, and a slice of honey maple turkey deli meat. Other than that, he doesn't like the texture of meat at all. I've tried Earth's Best fish nuggets, but he doesn't like them. The Dr. Praeger's fishies have pepper in them. He won't try beans. He tried hummus (complaining while I was making it that it smelled bad), and so he didn't like it, but I'm amazed that he actually tried it.

I can peel bell peppers and he will eat those (salted). I can cut a grape tomato or cherry tomato in half, salt it and he will eat it. He will eat steamed carrots with goat butter, but not raw carrots. He will eat steamed butternut squash with goat butter. He will eat steamed sweet potato with goat butter. But he doesn't like regular potatoes of any kind. He will eat dry roasted cashews – but is hesitant to try raw cashews. He has eaten marcona almonds (they look smooth on the outside), but not regular almonds (they look textured on the outside).

I just recently got him to eat a few cereals with the goat milk actually on them. Before then, this kind of mixed texture was out of the question.

I'm probably missing something here in what he will eat, but that's probably most of it anyway.

Maybe I should be thankful he's eating more than just waffles. But I'm so tired of making the same two sandwiches most of the time. There must be something else out there he will try.

So, I'm pretty much at the end of ideas, if not at the end of my rope. Anyone care to help?

The only help I can offer is by pointing out that your menu is at least twice as diverse as ours!

It may sound like a lot, but in actuality it's always: cashew butter & mango jam sandwich for one meal, then something with goat cheese for the next meal. Every day this repeats. I was just hoping for some other suggestions. And everything he does eat has been a hard-won struggle. He's kind of food-phobic. I don't expect him to just like anything new, but I'm just trying to think of the next thing to work on. Oh well.

My DS has food allergies and does not generally like to try new foods either. He does not like mixed textures (soup has to be smooth puree, no pieces of veggies) so we eat smooth soups and smoothies. I think it's great that you keep introducing him to new foods even if he won't eat them. I do make DS things he will eat, but I also offer him some food from my dinner and sometimes he tries it!

In the meantime, I take a food that he really likes and try to mix it up a little. He loves avocado, and he will now eat guacamole with bits of tomato and onion mixed in. DS has a hard time with meats still, so no advice for you there...He recently started eating deli meats and will eat mini meatballs dipped in ketchup. Do you think he might like quesadillas? I know he can't have cheese, but I have made it with refried beans (which you can mash smooth), and you could later try adding other veggies and a little ground meat. It is frustrating sometimes but my long-term goal is is for all of us to eat the same meal! It sounds like your DS does have a healthy diet though :)

What kind of soups and smoothies do you make? I'm wondering if there's something there I can work with.

Wish I could get DS to try avocado, I think he'd like the taste. It's the green color that just freaks him out.

I used to make lists when my oldest was 5.  One was what she *could* eat if she wanted.  Another was what she liked.  At 6.5 now, she is a bit more adventurous and my non-allergic 4.5yo lives on strawberry yogurt (no bits!) and oatio's cereal.  We've added beef and potato soup (she likes soup.  As a toddler we'd call veggie soup "birthday soup" after the Little Bear story.)  We also do hamburger patties, potatoes, 100% buckwheat noodles, and swiss chard with gluten-free tamari.  Before we had to eliminate wheat, we loved the everything-shaped pasta with broccoli bits, sesame seeds and tamari and sesame oil.  We called it "shark food" and they got it eat it from under the table!

Good idea about making lists. I'll try that when DS is older...

As for smoothies and soups, smoothies I just make it with whatever fruit is around, throw a mix of frozen fruit and fresh plus coconut milk yogurt into a blender (sometimes some coconut milk to thin it out). Papaya mango might be really tropical and yummy! Some people even put avocados and leafy greens in (like kale), searching the nutrition and good eating forum here for smoothies will give you a lot of ideas. The soups that DS likes are chickpea leek (saute leek until soft, drain and add canned chickpeas, add chicken broth and cook about 10 minutes until everything is soft, then cool and puree) and pumpkin or squash (roast in oven until soft, then scoop out into a pot, add broth and puree). I'm sure there are lots of other veggies that are good for pureed soups. The good thing about smoothies and soups is that you can adjust the thickness. DS prefers thicker texture so I use more frozen fruit for texture and add less broth in the soups. Plus I can make a big batch and we can all have some. Eventually, I hope to make the soups more chunky and maybe add pieces of cooked veggies in them!

A simple red lentil soup is delicious, super quick and easy.  It makes an almost smooth soup as it is, or run it through the blender.  Brown and green lentil soup is good the same way as well.  Lentils don't seem to agree with me, though, and since your little guy is allergic to peas (I am, too, though no love lost!) definitely give them a trial.
