Please give me advice

Hey everyone! im new to this thread and this is my very first post here..

Im 20 years old, and I have menustral problems. In fact I have had these problems for 4 years now... my periods were never normal. my gyno gave me contraceptive pills (mercilon) in order to regulate them. After that they never returned.

I was 17 when my grandmother passed away, and it was my end of school exams, so i was very stressed and depressed. I didnt pay much attention the the problem since i was busy with exams..8 months passed without me having a single period.

After re-consulting the doctor, she gave me hormonal tablets to regulate them, i have been taking them for the past three years. I dont get a period if i dont take tablets. I am so scared. will i ever get my periods normally? my blood test shows the following results..but i have no idea what they are supposed to mean.

FSH: 5.3

LH: 18.3

E2: 40

Progesterone: 0.3

My gyno says that my hormone levels are low and that i need to gain weight and that everything will be normal. I am only 40 kgs. I have been underweight my entire life, and I find gaining weight so hard. I am not anorexic. I eat like a pig. I never go hungry. Both my parents were skinny before they got married. I am of asian origin, so we have a very small frame. I have recently started taking 3 glasses of fresh milk everyday, and I am going to eat a lot of cheese and diary products so as to increase my weight. I dont know what else to do? could any of you tell me whats wrong with me? why am i not gaining weight easily? and what exactly is wrong with my hormones? will i ever be able to get my periods normally and have kids in the future??

thank you soo much for you help

Hi Pinkfairy,

You're still quite young and i'm wondering if you ever checked with your doctor about depression? I remember when my father passed away, I was REALLY depressed and I lost so much weight. i wasn't trying to get pregnant but I remember my cycle being off because of my massive weight loss. I also don't actually remember not eating...I'm like you and I love to eat so I was eating even when I was depressed. i think that all the stress just negatively affected me. Maybe it increased my metabolism and I just lost too much weight. By the way, are you taking a multi vitamin? i started taking one and it helped my cycles regulate. Make sure that you're getting enough vitamin d (you may want your doctor to do a test...mine did, said I was very deficient, even though i drink a lot of milk. After supplementing with vitamin D, my cycle became much more normalized. It was really astonishing.)

What day were your tests? If they were day three, then going by the FSH and progesterone, they seem ok. (Not a doctor so i'm not positive- i was just told that on day three, they wanted my FSH below 6 and my progesterone below 1.)

Anyway, I'm so sorry for what you've had to go through in your life. I hope that you find the answers you are looking for...

Do you have PCOS by any chance? I'm thinking maybe not since you're so thin but the amenorrhea makes me think you have PCOS, although there could be other reasons for amenorrhea. I have PCOS and the first symptom was that my periods were very irregular. I rarely got my period on my own but I was able to get pregnant with Femara which induced ovulation. Could you ask your doctor what your diagnosis is?

I would also recommend looking into PCOS. I was just recently diagnosed, and I had always been told before that my irregular periods were probably due to my weight (I'm very small/thin). You may also want to get tested for hypothyroidism. Both of those are hormonal issues where some of the symptoms that play out are no/irregular periods, depression, lack of energy. It's definitely worth doing some reading on. Even though taking the pills will regulate you for now, it's not going to heal the underlying issue. Good luck!
