Not so verbal 2yo writing/recognizing letters?

My son is 2 years and 3 months, he only regularly says about 25 words (many of them sort of his own language) but seems to understand most of what he hears. Lately he started being very insistent that we draw letters for him (come up to someone with a paper and crayon yelling "B! B! B!" or whatever) so we do it. Now yesterday or the day before he started doing it himself, drawing b, d, or G and announcing what he drew (correctly), also a few scribbles he says are b. When he saw I was impressed he started doing it all day long. It's actually been confusing since he's potty learning and also yells "pee!" when it's time to go, lol. Anyway how strange is this timing and development pattern? Do you think I should help him keep learning more of these?

I learned to write before I could read.  ("Mommy, how do you spell ...?  Mommy, read it."  Sounds just fine and sounds like fun!  Maybe not all day, but I don't see why you wouldn't play along.
