Martindale Hubbell Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers

For those in the legal profession, is Martindale Hubbell an objective unbiased "directory", or is it like a referral service that firms and individual attorneys pay to be listed in?

Or is it something in between?  If you can't pay to get listed how do you get your name in there?

Also, is the "Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers" the same thing as Martindale Hubbell itself or is it something above and beyond?

How would a solo practitioner in particular become listed as a "Preeminent Lawyer".

Thanks,

Martindale-Hubbell is a directory.  You can "purchase" products to add to it as a marketing strategy in terms of referral.  But the preeminent lawyer listing is a peer review listing and cannot be purchased. The Bar Register is part of M-H.  A solo practitioner with a good reputation could become a preeminent lawyer under this system with reviews from peers...

Lots of the other "ratings" sites out there are subscription-based and marketing tools....

HTH!

Thanks so much for the helpful answer.

I'm surprised that yours is the only post.  Or is there a better place to post law related questions?  Perhaps TAO?

Martindale Hubbel is a directory with a lot of paid products. Accept anything free and then walk away. Big firms have mostly abandonded the paid advertisements/listings and the peer review product is probably not worth participating in. And there is a fee.  If you are a sole practioner, steer your advertising money to a good personal website.
