Dairy-free, Nutritional yeast-free cheese substitute?

I am looking for a sauce to use as a substitute for cheese on pizza that does NOT contain nutritional yeast or any of the related yeasts (aka MSG.) It needs to be dairy free, though eggs are fine. Also gluten free. Actually, it doesn't have to be a sauce, but that's what I figure it will be. Anyone have any ideas?

Have you tried a tahini sauce? I like that on pizza. This sounds close to what I make: http://www.eatingwell.com/recipes/tahini_sauce.html

Another option is to use miso and a mild nutbutter, like raw sunflower, tahini or raw cashew, a little lemon, and salt. Miso is another cheese-y flavor. I usually use it in addition to yeast, but it works on its own.

This might sound weird but sometimes we put polenta on pizza (we get it premade from Trader Joes, not sure how well homemade would work) -- to me it tastes cheesy somehow!!

And I agree with the pp's idea too. You could also do ground pine nuts or walnuts with spices (onion & garlic powder, salt, paprika, etc.) and use it more like a parmesean topping.

try hummus! It may sound weird but it's GOOD! eat.gif

Interesting ideas. Thanks.

There is a pizza place here that makes a vegan pizza topped with hummus curried sweet potatoes  sweet onions and  tomatoes.  It's out of this world delicious.

How about something like Daiya cheese shreds.  Do they contain nutritional yeast?

I'll check that out.

Yes, Daiya has something yeast. I think they call it inactivated yeast or something. Just an advertising name to try and fool folks that it's got glutamate.

I like this recipe from "Yeah, That "Vegan" Shit".  It's not as cheezy as I would like it to be, but it's not bad!  She does have adult humor in her blog, so be ready for some of that if you choose to click on the link.

Wow that looks worth trying. http://glutenfreegoddess.blogspot.com/2011/02/cream-of-broccoli-soup-recipe-with.html does a cream of broccoli soup that uses potatoes and coconut milk to get the creamy taste. It's really good, too.
