alternative detergent for high efficiency washing machine

I have a very nice (and fairly new) HE washing machine. It uses very little water. I'm wanting to switch as many products in our home over to natural options as possible. I currently use a special HE detergent.  know that I cannot use regular detergent in my machine (I tried that for a while and ended up having a service call on the machine over it). I'm curious if anyone has seen any research on this or has any idea what might be best for me and why.
 

I'm a little learly to experiment because I don't want to cause a service call over it (which would cost me a lot of money)

The he detergents are less corrosive as well as being less foaming (gosh, I know that is the wrong word). I have found a few brands make an eco version that is he. Currently I have a bottle of sunlight which is supposedly green & he. I also have a brand from the drugstore (we're in Canada so you may not have the same brands where you are) that is both. They are most definitely a bit more expensive but I use so little that the price is not a big problem.

Crunchy Clean, Charlie's Soap and Country Clean are all great.
I make my own detergent with equal parts oxyclean, borax, washing soda, baking soda and powder calgon. It works great! I toss all the ingredients in the food processor and then give the jar a good shake every time I use it. Use less than a tablespoon. This recipe shouldn't suds at all.

I gave up on "eco" cleaners..they weren't getting the clothes clean. So went with Arms & Hammer sensitive skin concentrated laundry soap..little in it and its for HE machines

I use ECOS made by Earth Friendly Products, which is 100% natural and it says on it "ideal for HE front and top loading washers".  We've used it for years and really like it, though I have a traditional washer (but not for much longer).

some of the good eco ones will be safe for HE machines.  they will have the HE logo on the bottle.  we cloth diaper so i looked into what was best for those & our machine, and we use Planet.  it works well on all our clothes, and any time i have ever deviated from it, even with something fancier, it hasn't done as well for us.

Country Save is good and safe for HE washers. I find it similar to Charlie's.
