I'm hoping there's a migraine guru out there who can comment...

I have always been a chronic headache type of person with intermittent migraine attacks (no aura, but light & sound sensitivity, and nausea). I spent a long time thinking they were sinus headaches but nope, finally my provider figured out it was migraine.  Imitrex works wonderfully for me.  I have always suspected my migraines are related to hormones.

While I was pregnant, I had no headaches. No migraines. Zero.  It was amazing. I got one migraine in the first few weeks postpartum and then basically none until my baby turned 11-12 months old and started breastfeeding maybe a little less than he used to due to eating more solids. We are still breastfeeding and plan to continue. I've been getting headaches almost every day and then for a while I was getting migraines every day.  It seems like when he nurses less I get more migraines. I don't know if that is the pattern for sure, though.

I have a Mirena IUD.  I'm thinking of switching to some other type of contraception in hopes that it might help with the migraines. (The thought, maybe if I can make my body think it's "more pregnant" the migraines might go away!) :P   I'm not sure what to switch to though. I was planning on taking my Mirena out in the next year anyway and TTC again.

Does it sound like I need more estrogen? More progesterone? Both? I know it's probably just trial and error... I have a hard time figuring out my triggers. I know dehydration is one of them so I tend to drink lots of water. I also stay away from nitrates and MSG, as well as aspertame and all artificial sweeteners...  as well as heavy fragrances.  I do plan to discuss all of this with my provider at my next appointment, but I'm trying to do some research ahead of time.
