6 week sono, what she thought was 2 sac but just one heart beat...can I be confident just 1 baby?

I just want to make sure I am not going to get a twin surprise in a few weeks, and also wondered if anyone had this experience.  DH and I DTD Aug 8th, but were not planning this little one (on BCP).  Anyway, surprise!  7days later BFP.  High hcg at appx 11dpo, level was 4x that 2.5 days later and 3.5x that again less than 48 hrs later.  That, combined with some other weirdness, made them advise a sono (they thought dates were off, although I was positive of the conception date.  I ended up with a 4week 2 day sono that showed nothing at all. No sac, notta.  Repeat sono today (6weeks 3 days by my dates) The tech did an external sono and said  Oh! I see two...but could not get heart beats.  She did internal sono, saw what she "thought was 2 sacs, but only could easily find 1 heart beat".  She seemed stumped at the other blob there.  She assured me if there had been 2, one was not viable, but then she talked to the Dr and they want a repeat sono again in 4 weeks.  If they are sure, why 6 million sonos?  Anyone have this case and end up having definite  2 on a followup sono?

It is incredibly difficult to locate heartbeats at 6 weeks and the fact that she couldn't find one is completely normal. It's kind of amusing that she said what she did. It's so common not to be able to find any heartbeat at all that early.

Ultrasound is so difficult to use and not anywhere near an exact science. There's not much you can tell this early. I'd just hold out a few more weeks and go in for your next ultrasound and see or if it's really driving you crazy, you can get another scan with a different technician. It could be twins or it could just be one.

I agree.  I would not take a 6 w sonogram as definitive.  6 weeks is the earliest they can find a heartbeat.  If the wait is killing you, I would suggest going back in 2 weeks.  An 8 week sonogram should show if there is one or two embryos in there.

Good luck and congratulations.

They asked me to schedule again in 4 weeks.  I may cut that to 3, just to avoid losing my mind.  (What is left of it anyway! :))

This whole pregnancy has just been so weird.  My first 3 pregnancies were little to no morning sickness, mild fatigue, none showed until 16-20 weeks (even #3), bfp's came around 15 or 16 dpo.  This time I got bfp about 7 dpo.  24 hours sickness.  Mind numbing fatigue. No weight gain but an obvious belly, although the normal 6-10 week gassy super bloat I always get is much less severe.  The whole thing just feels so off to me.  Even if there does not end up being two, I feel pretty confident there started out with two, given the level of symptoms.

No, you cannot be sure of anything at 6 weeks. It is very possible to see a sac and/or fetal pole and or yolk sac at 6 weeks and not a heartbeat and find a heartbeat a week later. It could go either way at this point. Hope you get the news you want.
