I just read a paper written by a doctor in Japan. In a nutshell, prior to the 20th century, breastfeeding in Japan was often until 6-7 years of age in which to improve children's health. Hiring a wet nurse was common after the age of two. Then fast forward, breastfeeding until 2-3+ years of age was common until about 1960, and now artificial feeding is very common. I find that in the U.S. it is so often forgotten how common breastfeeding was here. It seems so much has changed in the last century, it seems the same in Japan too. I'm often searching for various other cultures, to see how much is intact, pertaining to breastfeeding, or how much has changed.Â

Regardless, here is the paper: http://www.dors.it/latte/docum/Buddhism%20and%20Breastfeeding.pdf
