Colposcopy while pregnant really safe (if without biopsy)? Anyone have it?

Hi wise mamas,

I am really on the fence, because I don't think I totally understand the seriousness of cervical dysplasia. When I was pregnant with my son (3 years ago), I had an HPV+ and ASCUS cell pap. They wanted to do a colposcopy, but I was too scared to mess with my cervix then and I ended up telling them no. Then we moved out of state, so I never followed up. Fast forward to about a year later. I went in to a gyn, and he skipped the pap and just put some vinegar on there and was like, "Yeah, that doesn't look normal, so the pap won't come back normal." He then did cryotherapy (froze off the cells twice in a row) and said that he was 99% sure it would be a clear pap in 6 months. Then we moved AGAIN.

So, thats the backstory. I am almost 12 weeks pregnant now and just had a pap done for my first appointment workup. I haven't gotten the results back yet, but I'm kind of freaking out with the what-ifs. If it shows abnormal cells, do I need to give in to a colposcopy? I know it's just some acidic vinegar, but cant that irritate the cervix? How fast can cancerous or precancerous cells grow? It has been a little over a year since the cryo......If it IS abnormal, should I just tell them to leave my cervix be until I give birth in March?

Thanks for any thoughts.

No personal experience with this, but from what I understand there is nothing they will do for treatment (after an abnormal colposcopy) until after the baby is born anyway... so I think in the event of an abnormal pap smear, I'd probably say no to anything further until after birth, since there isn't anything that can be done until then anyway. Not worth the stress IMO.

P.S. Just found this-

What if I have an abnormal pap smear during pregnancy?

It is safe to have a Pap smear during pregnancy. If your Pap smear results are abnormal, a colposcopy could be performed during your pregnancy. However, further treatment will probably be delayed until after your baby is born. Frequently, the birth of your baby will wash away any abnormal cervical cells. Having an abnormal Pap smear does not pose a risk to your baby.

i had a colposcopy with dd in the first trimester, i had like second tier abnormal cells and they said "do this or risk a historectomy after birth".   dd is a healthy happy 3 year old, and labor was 6 hours TOTAL.  so no problems for me. :)

My understanding is that PAPs have a high rate of flase positives when you are pregnant. And like a PP said, after birth all is found to be well.
