Studies/Research?

Do any of you mamas know of any actual studies that I can link people to?  I'm trying to find credible information, showing that homeschooled children DO attend college, and do well.  There is a "debate" on another forum, and I'm so sick of these people's comments that most HS'd kids are socially awkward, and have "patchy knowledge".  These people aren't providing any resources for their statements... it's just somehow what they know.  eyesroll.gif  One of the ladies says that her husband is a teacher, and she's in the education field as well... she says that every child that her husband has seen, who was previously HS'd, has been "socially awkward".

Depending on the forum, I would just let it go.  In the HS and US forums there are posts fairly (and sometimes extremely) critical of schools and school kids that many consider out of line with reality.  Same for HSers.  I would reply that when a kid acts a certain way, it can draw attention to their type of schooling.  I am amazed at how many people have been homeschooled but don't advertise it.  So, the father you are mentioning might have noticed the social awkwardness first, then blamed it on the homeschooling.  You just can't judge all of schooling or all of homeschooling based on these experiences.  But we do, sometimes.  The fact is that there are many influences in our behavior, and our educational choices are just one piece.  Just like politics, it's easy to forget that people are defined by more than one facet.

Hahaha!  That picture is exactly what I felt like.

It wasn't even an argument, really.  I flat out said that homeschooling is certainly not for everyone.  I was really just trying to get her to give up this idea that every single homeschooled child is "socially awkward".  She also kept going on and on with things like, "I'm sure there are a few parents out there who are qualified to homeschool, but it is really, really difficult to do it properly."

I'm not sure how she learned that, when she's never homeschooled... I also brought up the fact that, while she might see the social issues with HS, I could point out plenty of social issues with PS.  Bullying, for example.  She said that she was bullied in school, and was fine... and that it taught her that people weren't always going to be nice....  irked.gif

Some people... I was just suggesting that she open her mind a little, not rip her child out of his precious public school...lol.  banghead.gif

I believe I linked her to the first one you posted... and I also linked her here: http://www.rasmussen.edu/student-life/online-community/top-reasons-for-homeschooling/, but she said that it means nothing because it's just a blog entry...haha!
