I've been having pain in my rib cage on the right side for around 2 weeks now. It burns mildly pretty much all the time, but doesn't hurt when I press on it any more than it does normally. When I sneeze, it is a super sharp burning pain like you get with round ligaments, but round ligament pain isn't that high up, right? The pain extends from right under my breast in the middle of the right side down probably three inches. It is too high to be the baby kicking and I don't really think it is gallbladder related because I'm not in excrutiating pain (other than for a few seconds after sneezing), and I'm not really nauseated or anything. Anyone have any ideas what it could be?

Maybe costochondritis? Try googling it. Its basically an inflammation of the rib tissue. I've had it badly with both pregnancies... to the point where I'll wake up screaming if I move wrong in my sleep. I think I get it because I'm small with a short torso so my ribs really have to expand to be able to grow a baby:) Unfortunately there isn't really anything you can do to cure it. Chiropractic adjustments to expand the ribcage help a little. This time my midwife told me to rub Costor oil over the area, cover it with saran-wrap (to keep it from getting on your clothes, and apply a heating pad. It makes it does make it feel soooo much better, but is only practical to do when I'm at home and can sit down which isn't very often. For me, wearing anything tight (bra, nursing tank) makes it much worse as well. When I was pregnant with DS it started bothering me around 20 weeks, got worse and worse until 30 weeks, then a little better, and disappeared completely after I delivered him. This time it started a little earlier but hasn't been as bad as it was last time.
I have pains like that too, at two certain points on my ribcage (same place on both sides, in the front, directly beneath my breasts). It mostly hurts on the left side; I wondered if it just had to do with how I sit. It's not terrible, just irritating. Usually comes on later in the afternoon. If I press on it, it feels better.
Another vote for costochondritis. I have more of a tingling pain in the same area. Stretching my torso (door frame stretches, laying on a bolster and stretching arms out to the side, side stretches, light torso twists, etc.) and having good posture throughout the day has helped some. I also try to stay as stretched out as possible at night. I tend to curl up tight and that makes it worse.
Thanks mamas! I googled and the only thing I am wondering with the costochondritis is that the pain is pretty much straight down from my right nipple, not in the middle of my chest. I don't really have any pain near the middle of my chest at all....just centered on the right side under the breast. Does that still sound like cosochondritis?
I don't know anything about cosochondritis. I have been having quite a bit of rib pain for at least the last month or so, generally on the sides, lower ribs. But it is intermittent. I told the Dr. and he said it was all my insides being pushed up and spreading my rib cage out. (and he kind of implied that it was whining to complain about something that is so common, and I very nearly told him that when someone was spreading HIS ribs out from the inside, then he could get back to me on that. Grrr.) Good posture and stretching seems to help, plus if I'm going to ride in the car, which is when it gets worst, I take a couple of tylenol.
I've heard this a few times - "oh, everybody has to deal with it" - and I'm like, then why don't you have any ideas on how to mitigate it?? If it's so common, surely someone has come up with a way to make it a little better.
APToddlerMama, I know very little about costochondritis, but from what I've seen it looks like it tends to present in exactly the way you're describing - on the right side. Maybe our internal anatomy is skewed a little towards the right and puts a little extra pressure over there, I don't know.
