washer cleaning

I have a Whirlpool Duet washer that is supposed to be cleaned once a month on its clean cycle with bleach only. Is there anything natural that would be safe and effective to use?

I have a Whirlpool Duet and I just use vinegar instead and then do one rinse with hot water afterwards.
