Don't hate me, but I can't stand wool covers. I tried several with my last baby and I don't care what anyone says, there is no such thing as wool that doesn't feel scratchy. It feels awful to me, I can't imagine how much it must irritate baby's sensitive skin. I've never found soft wool. Even the softest, most expensive is a tiny bit scratchy after a while.
I have lots of acrylic yarn, however, and it is super wonderfully soft. I can crochet it up really thick so that even when stretched, you can't see light through it. Would this be water-resistant enough to knit covers with? I don't know if acrylic wicks or not. I'm working on one now, but baby isn't due until March, so I can't try it yet.
It doesn't have to be super absorbent. I never let my LOs sit in wet diapers, even at night, so I'm not worried about large amounts of pee soaking bedding or clothes. It just has to last for one pee for maybe up to ten minutes at a time.
Anyone tried it?
