I've got a quilt pattern for dd that ismachine appliqued. I have been putting off buying a new sewing machine for quite a while so it looks like now is the time. I know nothing about them. Does anyone know if I can machine applique with the normal zigzag machine stitch or do I need a machine that can do a special applique stitch ?

MAchine applique with zig zag foot

I've only done a few appliques, but I did those with a regular zig zag stitch. I set the stitch length to 0 and as narrow as possible. Then just fed the fabric through so it was a thick, solid color. I have no idea if that's how you do it or not, but I liked the end product.

Just a thank-you for your post. I've been wondering the same.
Incase you like doing applique after you try it, I just saw an idea in a pattern from www.ottobredesign.com where they had a top/bottom outfit where the top used cut-out pieces of the fabric from the bottom as an applique (so, say the pants had a floral pattern, you'd cut out a few of the flowers and then use them as appliques for the top by zig-zagging them on).
I think that you can get special embroidery machines with all kinds of stuff on them. Have fun shopping! www.threads.com has a sewing machine comparison on it, I think.

I've done this too - I didn't even make the stitch so small - just small enough so it holds on and the edges don't fray. It depends on the look you like.
