Hi Jessica,
Â
This is our first year too. We have twins who will be 5 in October. I keep moving out my "start" date because I feel similarly unprepared. I have now decided that the Autumnal Equinox (Sept 23) is our day to start--it's roughly when the days start getting shorter. Seemed fair to give the kids a nice, long summer! But, alas, my in-laws are coming, so I'm pushing school start to the Monday after they leave! So, keep doing what you need to do to feel sane! Maybe even January 1st is a good start date ;).
Â
Also, I'm giving myself a year of experimentation to get used to hsing and get my footing. I've cleaned off a bookshelf and put all the books I love about schooling/parenting/science/art, etc. in one place and that felt good. Tonight I'm going to start putting a binder together of things I want to do with the children...and one binder for "completed" projects so I have some sense of starting to document...
Â
Here are some other things I've done to help me get ready to start:
- Brainstorm values our hsing/family emphasizes
- Create a rough draft of our daily routine
- Create a rough draft of our weekly routine
- Start jotting down month-by-month topic areas (mostly seasonal/holiday-based)
Â
Hope that helps a bit!
