The main difference is that the other forum board will be closing (in January or so?) and the social group lives forever.

It is a bit hard to find right now. You can "subscribe" to the group activity, in the same way you would subscribe to a thread or forum. Also, it's not pretty, but the way I'm usually getting back to the group is by going to my user profile (by clicking on my name in the upper right corner) and then clicking on the icon under "Your Groups".
They did say that the group will eventually appear in the forums(?) menu, but it doesn't look like that will be happening soon.
