Reading programs for child with Speech delays/issues?

Hi :) We home school our 6 kids.   Our 6yr old has had pretty intense speech issues.  I am struggling on how to teach him to read. He knows all of his capital letters and a couple lowercase.  He can spell No, Ho-ho-ho, and Charlie. In all caps. That said he still forgets how to spell his name.  Most days he remembers, some days he forgets.  This memory recall issue happens fairly often in his life. The info is in there but he misplaces it for a bit. It took 2 years for him to get his name down.

He is a very sweet boy, very sensitive.  And he really wants to learn to read. However...he won't cooperate with the BOB books because they are to "babyish".  Same for Starfall and Reading Eggs.  He would use Starfall last year but not this year. I looked into Explode the Code but I think it is to advanced.

I am really interested in finding him something he can do online. To supplement things we do around the kitchen table. I plan to write out the BOB books onto index cards and use those. He really enjoys the computer. His brother is using Teaching Textbooks for math. Charlie asked if he could try to.  So I made him an account and he has flown through the first 4 lessons.  Of 3rd grade math!  I was really surprised.  The lessons are narrated and other than reading a few things back to him here and there he is able to do it on his own. I think  he is really responding to the freedom of it and also the fact that it is what his 7yr old bother is doing too.

If anyone has any tips for kitchen table learning or computer/online programs let me know.

Thanks!

I don't have any suggestions but I wanted to say I'm in a similar boat. My 7 y/o had his top 4 teeth pulled at 18 months and bc of that has some speech issues. He desperately wants to read on his own and he can sound a lot out now but just has some trouble due to his issue. He got two of the teeth in a few months ago so we are working on sounds again and how to make them correctly.

I would definitely try Explode the Code. We use it with my 7 y/o and my 9 y/o (who was a slow to start reader as well and wouldn't use Starfall bc of how "babyish" it was but caught on very quickly with ETC). They have an online program but we haven't tried that. I LOVE all the workbooks though. They really have helped my kids and they enjoy them. Good luck and looking forward to others' suggestions. :)

For kids with serious speech issues (not from losing teethsmile.gif) people often recommend Lindamood Bell LIPS program.  It is also recommended for dyslexics, but isn't exclusive to that population.  However, a dyslexic WITH speech issues usually really benefit from this.

I know there is a way that a mom can be trained to use it at home.  For some reason, I think it is it's own particular "package" so that training is included.  I am not finding it on their website, but I will ask around.

ETA:  found the at home stuff  http://www.ganderpublishing.com/LiPS.html

It is pricey, but I understand that the resale is good too.  It may be something to keep in mind if you don't find anything that works.
