Need some Feedback

Hi everyone.

I really was not sure where to post this so if you have any suggestions as to where I might want to post it I will appreciate it.

My husband and I have will have been married 4 years next month. I have a soon to be 8 year old son from a previous relationship. My husband and I have been talking babies recently, or it may be more me then him lol. My husband is a recovering alcoholic and has been sober two years now. He is having issues with being able to be intimate with me. It has a lot to do with adjusting to sobreity I'm sure. Being a man it's difficult for him to speak openly about it, and me being a woman I do the best I can to make him talk with me about it. He made a few doctor's appts and he has another next month.

In the mean time I have been thinking about myself. I am overweight and have very irregular periods. I have been working out and trying to eat right. So far I have taken off about 30lbs since Jan. I am a slow loser because I am a big eater lol. Today I went to see my OB so that I could get a pap and speak with him about my irregular periods. He did an ultra sound and mentioned the lining of my uterus looked a bit thick. He said it meant that I wasn't ovulating and that was causing the bleeding. He gave me a prescription for provera (sp) He said it would stop the bleeing and to go back and see him in 1 month.

I am just a little concerned. I am worried first can this issue be cancerous? and second will this mean I will not be able to concieve? I know these are all thoughts I should have spoke to him about but I wasn't thinking while I was there.

I am so sorry this post is jumbled and long. Thanks for reading

HI kellzg,

I don't have any answers for you but just wanted to say welcome to MDC and hug2.gif It sounds like you are well on your way to dealing with some big issues. Congratulations on the weight loss and to your husband for his sobriety. There are many issues that can cause someone not to ovulate all the time, some of them related to weight, some not, so I don't think you have to be worried about cancer. There are lots of very knowledgeable women on here, and I'm sure some of them will have some ideas for you!

I don't have any knowledge to share with you either, but I also just wanted to send you a hug2.gif.  I know there will be others on here who can share some knowledge and experiences with you that will be helpful!

Welcome to MDC!!  wave.gif

Congrats on losing some weight!  I'm sure that as you lose more your cycles will start to become more and more regular.  Estrogen and progesterone are stored in fat so too much fat can lead to hormonal imbalances that might cause annovulatory cycles, short luteal phases, random spotting, etc.  You mentioned that you have had some random bleeding?  Also, you doctor mentioned a thick uterine lining?  I am certainly no expert, but I would imagine what he meant was that your lining was thick and you were getting random bleeding it could point to breakthrough bleeding from an annovulatory cycle.  I'm not sure that he can know that for certain, however, without doing an u/s around the time of ovulation and/or other hormonal tests.

So, it would be my recommendation that you start to chart your cycles.  Charting your basal body temperature and cervical fluid will allow you to see when you are fertile, when/if you ovulated, how long your luteal phase is (and if it's a fertile length), when to expect AF, when is a good time to test, if you are pregnant, and if there is anything of concern happening with your cycle.  It will also be really fascinating to watch your cycles start to regulate as you continue your weight loss and diet changes.

If charting sounds interesting to you, please post for more information about how to get going.  Many women on this forum chart and by using a free site like www.fertilityfriend.com you can share you charts with us to get tips and help deciphering what is happening.  Your charts will also be an invaluable tool to show to you doctor so that he can know more about what is happening with your cycles.  Personally, I would not start any medications or major herbal supplements until I knew more about what was happening.  But that is definitely a personal decision.  Good luck and let us know if we can be of assistance!

Good on you for losing weight! I totally agree with the suggestion to start charting - it's a great way to get to know your body and when and if you're ovulating.
In the meantime, I think you need to go back and talk to your doctor. A quick Google of "provera" showed that women should be using effective birth control while taking it. If you WANT to get pregnant, your doctor may be able to help or refer you to a fertility specialist.
